Learning from your dance FAILS…

Every dancer makes mistakes. Every dancer remembers a scary experience on stage. And every dancer often sees afterwards (on a dvd, photo’s or hears from audience members that the mistake or FAIL wasn’t even noticeable). A split second or count on stage can sometimes feel like an extremely long time and it’s amazing how quickly your mind reacts when in a situation like that. Often, only the choreographer/instructor, fellow dancers, and yourself even realize that a mistake was made.

Obviously some mistakes are seen, and recoveries are made quicker than ever imaginable.

What is important to remember when dancing in an ensemble or group is to remember body language, eye contact, trust, support, and communication with your fellow performers. So much can be said by a simple glance. And often this can prevent dance FAILS or help the recovery.

I was taught that you carry on dancing no matter what happens. My teacher always used to say that if a bomb goes off next to you, you carry on! I believe this and try to teach my dancers this to a certain extent too. Mistakes happen, but that doesn’t matter. What does matter is your recovery, and how you turn the mistake into a success.

So it’s the week the competition. Some people’s nerves are shot, some people are highly motivated, others try keep their heads up by joking and just having fun in class.

This is it. The dances are what they are and stressing now will do no good. My advice to everyone is just have fun! Enjoy the choreography, and enjoy the stage! I know you always do :)

It’s the end of a long week – can’t wait to watch The Vow

I’m so happy. It’s the end of a very long week and I can’t wait.

Tonight we’re going for dinner and a movie with some friends. And we’re going to watch The Vow, opening in theatres today. It feels like I have been waiting forever to watch it. Woohoo!

Tomorrow I will be attending a dance and gymnastics Pilates post-ed course. Another thing to look forward to.

It’s just been one of those weeks

You know those days when nothing goes your way, everything gets taken the wrong way, and anything that could go wrong will go wrong. Well so far this has been one of those weeks.

It’s the week before my dance studio’s annual compulsory art festival, which includes all the dancers in the studio (age 3 to age 50). So obviously everyone’s stress levels are running high and knowing this I always keep calm and try to keep everyone around me motivated and I try to get them excited for the 2 weeks that lie ahead of us. But sometimes it’s difficult to keep my head above water. Especially when you have unhappy parents, and teachers and students picking up last minute injuries.

In times like these I always like to think back to previous shows and competitions and how well they all turned out and how much all the students enjoyed them. Looking back at some of the photo’s, I decided to share them with you too.

Life is precious

Life is precious. From a new life into this world, growing into a cute little child that comes up with the most interesting outlooks to the world, to a young adult starting out on the road to success, falling in love, becoming a parent and leaving your imprint in the world, making a name for yourself, and growing old. Life holds so many exceptional things for each one of us to go through. And even though there is much heartache in this world, there is so much good and so much happiness that we should all live each day to the fullest and love the day we are living in.

Losing a friend (old or new) always makes you think of life as being expendable. Something that can be taken away from us at any moment. Last week an old school friend passed away way too early. And as last year was marked by death’s and saddnesses, this event just made me think again about how precious each and every life is.

I sit watching my junior dance students all the way up to my senior students and seeing how much dance means to each one of them and all in different ways, I feel touched and amazed by the effect I can have on somebody’s life. No matter how small you may feel in life, your actions (big and small) can mean the world to somebody else.

I write this post in memory of many great people who have passed away way too young and have touched my life (probably without even knowing it).

This message I read today meant the world to me and I think it’s a very clever message for us all “If you cannot make the funeral service today, I ask that you do something for him today. Smile at someone, or give someone a hug, tell yourself you’re awesome, and believe it. Feel free today. This was his legacy, and we will continue it. X”

So I want each and everyone of you to think about what you can do to make someone else’s day, or even just your own. Smile at a stranger, help someone less fortunate, spoil yourself with a long candlelit bath, hug someone close to you, tell someone you love them. Do something that may seem small and insignificant, but may mean the world to someone else.

I have decided to perform a small act of kindness everyday. Starting with today. In memory of everyone who has been taken away from us too soon, and their loved one’s too.

I love taking photo’s and having my iphone with me all the time is perfect because I always have a camera at hand. What I love even more is adding effects to my photo’s. This week I will be using some old apps and some new apps on my phone to create some pretty pics.

New dreams for the future

I believe that dreaming big is very important in life. And the minute I feel like I may be standing still, I start to dream up new dreams and new ways of challenging myself.

This past week has been one of those weeks and today the process of making those dreams come true started. I can’t say much at the moment but, I do have an awesome quote that will keep me inspired throughout this new journey and hopefully it can bring some inspiration and motivation to your dreams too.
