Rubiks What?

According to the English Collins Dictionary:

Rubik cube , Rubik’s cube
n Trademark a puzzle consisting of a cube of six colours, each face of which is made up of nine squares, eight of which are individually rotatable. The aim is to swivel the squares until each face of the cube shows one colour only
(C20: named after Professor Erno Rubik (born 1944), its Hungarian inventor)

Clockwise from upper left: V-Cube 7, Professor's Cube, V-Cube 6, Pocket Cube, original Rubik's Cube, Rubik's Revenge,.

The above picture is of different kinds of Rubik’s Cubes – There are more than one kind? Yep Yep.

I have not been able to solve a Rubik’s Cube without cheating. I landed up buying my dad the “original” Rubik’s Cube for his birthday causing this fascination/irritation to start from scratch.

I have now decided to try and solve it…ugh…what a mission. So I have been trying to do some homework to help me. Once I have solved it (if I do) I will definitely let everyone know, but for now; I will keep trying.

If by any chance there are people out there that are just as pathetic and clueless at this and are also as fascinated, try visiting these links for some help.

Tiny Habits

Since I was a little girl I have had many different habits from chewing my hair to squishing my toes in mud. Luckily most of those habits have disappeared over time, but there are a few that have stuck up until now.

I think my habits have a lot to do with feeling. When it comes to texture, i’m rather fussy. There are certain kinds of material that I just can’t stand. Wool was one of them and for many years I would freak out at the thought of a jersey.

I do love the feeling of smooth, cold things, like when you lightly place your hands on the top of water (bath or pool). It’s not a feeling I can describe but it’s so relaxing. Another feeling I have always loved is the feeling of hair through my fingers. So I have always played with my hair especially when I can’t sleep. I have also always played with other peoples hair. My friends still know me as the one that constantly has her finger in her hair. I have actually recently found out that this habit of mine is rather contagious and one of the other teachers at the dance school started doing it too a few years back, after noticing me do it, and now she can’t stop.

I also love to run cats and dogs tails through my fingers or toes. Weird? I know. I love playing with their ears too. This is something I have always done without even thinking twice but lately it’s a different story. My one cat (Sushi) is getting really old and I have started noticing that when I rub his tail it is sometimes wet. Smell my hands and almost freak out at the smell of cat pee. I think he forgets to lift his tail when he goes to the loo. So now I’m starting to think twice about touching his tail, but honestly I sometimes still get caught unaware and then find myself running to the bathroom in disgust.

Weird habits? Yes, I guess so. But I have also come to realise that everyone has strange habits. When I was still in school there were these twins in my extra maths class and they just loved the feeling of peoples earlobes. Man it’s annoying when people randomly rub your earlobes as if they are rubbing a magic lamp in hope of a genie popping out. I also remember everyone shouting at them after a while. In the beginning it was rather funny but after a while it started getting a bit freaky.

Now I know everyone must have some weird habit, that people either know of or don’t know of at all. Please don’t be shy to share them. I need some entertainment after studying all day, so please do me a favour.

The Pros of Not Having DSTV

I’m one of those poor people that doesn’t have DSTV. That’s rite, only SABC and eTV for me.

Despite really bad movies and always getting great tv programs months or even years later than everyone else, I have found some good things about not having DSTV.

  • You have toilet breaks during movies (otherwise known as Ad breaks)
  • If you forget the popcorn (no worries, soon there will be another Ad break)
  • During the Ad break you can catch up on the exercise you didn’t have time for earlier on in the day.
  • How I met Your Mother (Yes we are the first and only to see it, ha ha ha DSTV watchers – even though you get etv too)
  • Lipstick Jungle (even though it’s finished, it was great while it lasted)
  • Sex and The City (after sooooooo many years it was only SABC 3 that showed it and showed the repeats over and over again – I don’t really mind those kind of repeats though).
  • Oprah (yes I watch Oprah, not lately though after they stopped showing it late at night).
  • Terrible movies that I land up (often) having to watch anyway for University.
  • SYTYCD (For those of you that aren’t dance crazy, So You Think You Can Dance). I know the American one is on DSTV, and those that have DSTV think they are so much cooler because they get to watch the American one (they also think they are way too cool to watch the South African one) but hello LOCAL IS LEKKER!!!
  • Strictly Come Dancing ( I love watching famous-ish people make asses of themselves, some of them are really good though).

For all of you who don’t have DSTV either, you are not alone. Tell me what you love about SABC or eTV (if you have DSTV and love something on these channels you can still tell me-really)

Time Is Limited

Well we got our Modern and Tap exam results back today and I’m not too pleased with what my students got. I know they could have done better and I think they know it too.

It’s almost time for the show…eek…it’s this weekend already. There is still soooo much to do. I don’t even know where to start.

I’m actually meant to be studying at the moment. Yeah sure. All I can do is think about the stupid show. It must stop now, I need to study.

My foot still isn’t better. For those of you who don’t know, I have tendinitis. I am being treated for it (with weekly injections into my foot) but the Doc said they won’t really do much if I keep dancing. At this point in the year I don’t have a choice but to keep dancing. JOY! I really don’t know what I did today in rehearsal but I have insane pains in my one shin (just happens to be the same leg as the tendinitis). I really just think my body is coming to the stage where it needs rest. SLEEP.

My blog posts seem to be rather scattered and few these days, some what like my brains feel. So excuse them please.

Watching Movies

Over the next two weeks I will be watching a bunch of movies. I don’t really know if they are good movies (in fact some of them might be really bad movies, in order to prove a point). Why will I be doing this? Well I have exams coming up this week and next week and the movies I will be watching are actually for my exams.

Wow, what am I studying that I get to watch movies all day long? Lucky hey? Not really…some of the movies are not so great. The movies I have to watch this time seem to be alright though.

I have already found and rented three of them on the list. The others will be a little harder to get hold of, so if anyone has any ideas of where I can get them please let me know.

The movies I have already rented are; Sweeney Todd, In Love and War, and Secretary. The ones I still need to get my hands on are; Cry Freedom, Funny Games, The Getaway, Intimacy, The Piano Teacher, Choke, and Doomsday.

I would also really appreciate any feedback or comments on these movies (but only if you have watched them please) it could really help me in my exam.

“Dare To Dance”

Well lately I have been a lot quieter (on all fronts) than I usually am. I haven’t even been tweeting much or even considering updating my Facebook status.

This is all because of exams. Not University exams (like the ones I’m meant to be studying for now), but rather dancing exams. The worst part is i didn’t even dance my own exams this year. It was just because of stressing for my students and making sure they are ready. For some reason though my feet are covered in blisters…hmmm.

We have now officially survived 2 out of 3 weekends of exams. Firstly Hip Hop, then Modern and Tap, and this weekend coming up will be Acrobatics. I have also come to realise that most examiners are really nice people and really knowledgeable but some are just truly horrible and condescending. Both our Modern and tap examiners were great women to work with, and at the end of the day we learnt a lot from them. But that Hip Hop examiner, Gosh, lets just hope and pray we never get her again.

I’m specifically not mentioning names because I know that everyone has a reputation to uphold, but that examiner looked and acted like a real witch. I’m sure the kiddies that still believe in witches were scared out of their wits.

So our exams are almost over, which will give us teachers a small part of our lives back. Then there is the end year show, which I can almost say is worse than exams. The stress to get everything done in time, and to make sure everything is perfect…EEEEK!

Honestly the show is always great and always works out at the end of the day, but for me it seems to be nerve wrecking every time I must run up or down those dreadful stairs backstage. Two years ago just at the end of the show, when we were running to be on stage for the prize giving, I went flying down the stairs. I landed up going to hospital at midnight and walking out with my arm in a cast and sling and my leg in a cast too. What was that about the saying “Break a Leg” being good luck?

It was also rather funny as our slogan is ” Dare to Dance”
